Pacquiao as Philippine national hero?

Would you want the world to think that Manny Pacquiao is the Philippines’ national hero?

In the online edition of “Eye On The Philippines,” international news network CNN placed Pacquiao beside Jose Rizal under the national heroes category in an infographic summarizing basic Philippine facts.

The infographic also showed that the Philippines has a total population of 103,775,000; total Internet users of 8,278,000, and a literacy rate of 90 percent.

As for the country’s demographics, Filipinos’ life expectancy is at 72 years old and their average age is at 22.9, it said.

CNN is shining the international spotlight on the Philippines with a week-long special programming called “Eye On The Philippines” which will feature live daily news and special reports on cable TV, and an extensive online coverage at www.cnn.com/eyeon.

CNN said the program highlights will include an in-depth interview with President Benigno Aquino III, and with the brothers Zobel de Ayala – Jaime Augusto and Fernando – of the Ayala Corporation, the country's largest and oldest business conglomerate.

It will be aired from April 30 to May 4 to more than 280 million households around the world.

“CNN's ‘Eye On’ is a series that takes you to different countries around the world, highlighting influence and innovation. We showcase interesting places and intelligent people who have the potential to change our world,” the network said.

“Eye On The Philippines” will also provide insight into the Filipinos and our culture through special reports on Philippines being the so-called “call center capital of the world,” and other social issues such as child labor and poverty.

As for the online coverage, the infographic was accompanied by stories about the "next Pacquiao," migrant workers, corruption, and the country’s best beaches.

CNN also launched a special iReport initiative calling on people to share their photos and videos highlighting the sights and sounds of the Philippines. The best stories and videos will be featured on CNN's Eye On website and on TV.

“We’d like you to share the sights and sounds that you think capture the true flavor of the country. Send us your photos, or put yourself on video and tell the world what the Philippines is really like,” it added.

With these topics lined up, will ““Eye On The Philippines” help attract tourists or will it drive them away?
