MTRCB suspends T3 for 3 months; TV5 to appeal decision

The Movie and Television Classification Board (MTRCB) has decided to suspend “T3: Kapatid, Sagot Kita”, a public affairs program hosted by brothers Erwin, Raffy and Mon Tulfo for three months due to “grave threats” allegedly issued by the program hosts.

The MTRCB also  imposed a P100,000 fine on “T3” and ordered that the televiewers be informed its suspension through an advisory aired before the replacement program is shown.

This was learned from MTRCB spokesman lawyer Toto Villareal, who  added that after the suspension is served “completely and faithfully”, “T3” will be put under probation and each of its episodes will be reviewed by the board.

TV5 reacts

As expected, this decision did not sit well on TV5, the network which airs “T3.”

The Kapatid network’s official statement sent to Yahoo! Philippines OMG! reads: “TV5 regrets the decision of the MTRCB and views it as an act in excess of its jurisdiction. At this point, TV5 will turn to the Court of Appeals and seek judgment in its pending petition to enjoin the MTRCB from further enforcing the sanctions until a definitive ruling  is made on the issue of grave abuse of discretion committed by the Censorship Board.”

Villareal insisted however, that “we (MTRCB) can strike out as objectionable or impose necessary sanctions if there’s anything indecent or offensive or which will induce anyone to commit violence against another.”

It will be recalled that MTRCB earlier suspended “T3” for 20 days after the Tulfo brothers aired no-holds-barred statements against Raymart Santiago and wife Claudine Barretto after they figured in an airport brawl with Mon Tulfo.

Why Alma Moreno is running for senator

Alma Moreno (Contributed photo)It’s full steam ahead for Alma Moreno, who has confirmed her senatorial bid  during her recent birthday celebration at Manila Pavilion Hotel along U.N. Avenue, Manila. The Parañaque city councilor said she is ready to take on the challenge of a higher government post.

"Actually, noon pa ang dami nagsasabi na tumakbo ako for a higher office, senator nga, but then may kaba pa ako. Pinagdasal ko sa Diyos ito. I said, please give me a sign. And after Holy Week nga, I got what I prayed for.  I woke up one day na wala na ang kaba ko. And I really felt that I am ready for it. Talagang pinaghandaan ko ito," Alma explained.

To doubting Thomases who question her ability to govern, Alma has this to say "Kaya ko. Hindi ako papasok kahit saan kung hindi ko kaya."

Preparations

Unknown to many, Alma has been studying AB Political Science Major in Local Government Administration at the Makati University, from where she will be graduating on June 30. Alma also took a Leadership and Management Development Program at the Ateneo de Manila University. She went to Thailand to attend a seminar on public service with fellow councilors.

"Ang pag-aaral, wala sa edad," she said, adding that she is a good student.

But of course, she learned more about governance and public service OJT (on-the-job)  style. Before she got elected into public office, Alma  has been exposed to people from all walks in life and to public service when  former husband, Joey Marquez, became mayor of Parañaque City. She learned even more about public service when she became councilor and officer of the 17,000 strong Philippine Councilors League (PCL).

Alma was national secretary general and the executive vice president of PCL before her election as its  national president .

"Kaya nalibot ko ang halos kasuluksulukan ng Mindanao. Pati na Luzon at Visayas. "

As PCL president, Alma  purchased  additional vehicles for the use of councilors on official business in Metro Manila. The three-storey PCL Hostel in Las Piñas has been renovated to house councilors and other politicians from the provinces who can't afford to stay in big hotels in Manila.

The PCL successfully lobbied for the Civil Service Eligibility Law for local legislators, or RA 10156, which  Pres. Noynoy Aquino approved on Dec. 20, 2011.

Family support

Alma’s  husband, Marawi Mayor Fred Salic, is supporting her political plans.  So, too, are her seven children,  Mark Anthony Fernndez, 33: Vandolph Quizon, 28: Charles Yeoj Marquez, 21: Teresita Seen "Winwyn" Marquez, 20; Vittorio Joey Marquez, 15; Maria Maal Venesa Marquez, 11 and Alfah Salic, three.

Alma is a member of the Lakas-CMD headed by Sen. Bong Revilla.

20-3, Senators vote to convict Corona

(UPDATE4) After 43 trial days, the Senate sitting as impeachment court have rendered its decision on the impeachment case of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

As of this posting, Senators Edgardo Angara, Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano, Franklin Drilon, Francis Escudero, Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, TG Guingona, Gringo Honasan, Panfilo Lacson, Lito Lapid, Loren Legarda, Sergio Osmena III, Kiko Pangilinan, and Koko Pimentel, Ralph Recto, Bong Revilla, Tito Sotto, and Antonio Trillanes all have voted for Corona's conviction.
Senators Joker Arroyo, Miriam Santiago, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., meanwhile voted for Corona's acquittal.
"This is not justice, political or legal. Certainly not the law..it is only naked power, as it was in 1972," Arroyo said as he defended his vote.
Each senator was given two minutes to explain their votes while as presiding officer, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile was last to vote.
Corona was impeached by the House of Representatives in December after 188 congressmen signed the impeachment complaint.

From the original eight, the prosecution team reduced its complaint to three articles of impeachment.

Article II: Non-inclusion of assets in SALN

Deemed as the prosecution’s strongest case, Article II of the impeachment complaint accuses Corona of inaccurately declaring his assets, including peso and dollar deposits and real estate properties.

In his 2010 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth, Corona declared "cash and investments" amounting to P3.5 million.

The prosecution team presented bank managers of the Bank of Philippine Islands and Philippine Savings Bank who testified that Corona has at least P31 million peso deposits.

The defense team, on the other hand, presented Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales as hostile witness who accused the chief justice of having $10-million deposits, citing transaction records from the Anti-Money Laundering Council report.

But Corona refuted these and claimed that he has a combined peso and dollar accounts only worth P185 million.

He said he did not declare his dollar deposits worth $2.4 million or around P105 million because of the confidentiality guaranteed by the banking secrecy and foreign currency deposit units laws.

As for the P80-million peso accounts, Corona said they are commingled funds that he does not solely own. These accounts contain the expropriation proceeds of the sale of the lot owned by his wife’s company, Basa Guidote Enterprises Inc., the common funds from his late mother, and some savings of his children.

Meanwhile, Corona declared five real properties in his SALN including a house and lot in Quezon City and four condominium units.

The chief justice, however, allegedly owns various properties under the name of his children, who, the prosecution said, have questionable capacity to acquire posh properties.

Article III: Flip-flopping decision

In Article 3, the prosecution panel intended to cast doubt on Corona's competence, integrity, probity, and independence as a chief justice following the Supreme Court's flip-flopping decision in the case between the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines (FASAP) and the Philippine Airlines (PAL).

The prosecution presented FASAP President Roberto Anduiza to testify that then Associate Justice Corona was responsible for the recall of the SC ruling in favor of the alleged illegally retrenched 1,400 PAL flight attendants.

PAL Vice President for Sales Exequiel Javier also took the witness stand to expose the alleged perks and special privileges that Corona received, including a platinum card that gave him unlimited top class courtesy travel, which the prosecutors believe motivated Corona to rule in favor of PAL.

However, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile stopped the prosecution from presenting Javier as he pointed out that the prosecution never accused the chief justice of receiving favors and gifts in the articles of impeachment.

Meanwhile, the defense was not able to present evidence to refute the allegations due to time constraint.

Corona said he was supposed to explain the issue in his narrative testimony but his poor health prevented him from doing so.

Article VII: The Corona-Arroyo affair

Article VII emphasizes Corona's ties to former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who named him chief justice in May 2010.

The prosecution presented Justice Secretary Leila De Lima to prove that Corona played a special role to allow the Arroyo couple to escape electoral sabotage charges.

The SC issued a temporary restraining order on a government-issued travel ban against Arroyo, who said was leaving the country to seek medical treatment, but the Department of Justice ordered airport authorities to defy the SC order. The former president now Pampanga representative is now under hospital arrest.

De Lima cited incidents mentioned in the dissenting opinion of Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno which the justice secretary said clearly showed that Corona was acting in favor of Arroyo.

The impeachment court, however, ruled De Lima’s testimonies as hearsay since she was not present during the SC’s discussion of the TRO and merely reading Sereno’s dissenting opinion.

The prosecution wanted Sereno to testify but the Senate refused to issue a subpoena.

Corona said his explanation on this accusation was also part of his testimony but he was forced to cut it short as he was not feeling well.

Closing arguments

While the senator-judges will decide on three articles of impeachment, the prosecution and defense teams decided to focus their closing statements on Article II of the impeachment complaint.

The prosecutors said they have strongly proved that Corona is “morally unfit” to remain as chief justice since he lied about his SALN to conceal his wealth.

The defense, on the other hand, insisted that the non-disclosure of some of Corona’s accounts does not constitute an impeachable offense as he did it in “good faith.”

Corona submits waiver, apologizes

Chief Justice Renato Corona on Friday submitted a confidentiality waiver--and dropped an earlier condition he set--which would allow the court look at his four dollar accounts.

At the same time, corona apologized for his behavior in Tuesday's trial, while maintaining he did not "walk-out" but was really not feeling well.

"I am submitting this [waiver] without any condition," Corona told the court Friday as he returned to the witness stand. On Tuesday he dared all 188 impeachment complainants as well as Senator Franklin Drilon to also submit their confidentiality waivers.

His move to submit the waiver came after Corona's apology to the Senator-judges.

“Ako po ay nagpapakumbaba at humihingi ng paumanhin sa inyo. Hindi ko inaasahan na ganoon ang mangyayari,” Corona said.

Corona also denied that he planned the alleged "walkout" and insisted that he was just not feeling well after suffering from hypoglycemia.

“I was in a total state of confusion. Sa hilo ko po, ako ay naduduwal. Ayaw ko naman po maduwal sa harap ng camera,” he said.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile asked the chief justice if he’s now ready to face the court despite his condition.

Corona said although his doctors advised him to skip today’s trial, he still chose to return.

“Nasa puso ko po ang obligasyon ko sa bayan na magpaliwanag na hindi natapos noong Martes.

Pumunta rin po ako para magbigay galang sa Senado bilang institusyon ng ating pamahalaan,” he explained.

The chief justice said he has not finished reading the remaining two pages of his statement which deals with the alleged flip-flopping on the case of the Philippine Airlines vs. Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines, and the issuance of the temporary restraining order allegedly in favor of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

No more cross and direct examination

The prosecution and the defense panel both moved not to push with direct and cross examination, respectively.

Defense lead counsel Serafin Cuevas said that due to Corona's condition, they would no longer subject the Chief Justice to a direct examination.

Private prosecutor Mario Bautista said prosecution will also no longer cross-examine Corona but moved that his statements on Tuesday are "inadmissible in evidence."

American Idol Crowns Season 11 Champ

"American Idol" has a new champion.
(SPOILER: This story reveals who won Season 11.)
Looks like he'll be handing in his notice to the pawn shop. Phillip Phillips, 21, from Leesburg, Georgia has been crowned the newest "American Idol."
It was an emotional victory for the young man, who beat out 16-year-old Californian Jessica Sanchez for the top prize.
Immediately after learning the news, Phillip's pal on the show, Heejun Han, raced over and embraced the singer, who took a moment to process the news.
After hugs from the Top 12 group, Ryan Seacrest handed the new "Idol" a guitar and he was put in front of the mic to sing the tune that will be his first post-win single, "Home." Three-quarters through the song, though, the young man was overcome with emotion, and tears trickled down his face.
Standing on stage as confetti rained down on his head, Phillip stepped back from the mic and attempted to keep his emotions under control.
Eventually, he left the stage and went into the audience where he embraced his family, and later, the judges.
Shortly before the results were announced, Phillip gave his last "Idol" speech, using it to thank the crew, and the fans.
"It's been such an honor to be up on this stage, playing with everybody," Phillip said, paying tribute to the "Idol" band and crooners like John Fogerty, whom he sang with at Wednesday's finale. "We wouldn't have sounded so good without them.
"Thank you all for voting for us," he added, for the fans. "It's just been crazy."
More than 132 million votes, a worldwide total, were cast.

The commanding rendition left not only the audience at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on their feet, but it resonated with Jennifer Hudson, who Tweeted about it.
"Alright Jessica n jennifer !!!!!" the Oscar and Grammy winner (and "Idol" alum) wrote.
Several other stars also chimed in on the passionate performance.
"Ok WOW that was the best performance I have witness on idol Jennifer and Jessica #Americanidol woohooooi tears !!" "So You Think You Can Dance" judge Mary Murphy Tweeted.
Juliette Lewis was also prompted to Tweet about it, writing, "#JenniferHoliday Miss legend just blew my mind. Singin it hard. Nasty. REAL. Thank you."
So did Phaedra Parks, from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta."
"Jennifer Holiday & that cute young gal just SANG that song-I thought I was in church for a minute *waves prayer cloth* #American Idol," she wrote.
